Storytelling (what most people refer to as “writing”) is actually an ancient technology practiced by wandering bards and minstrels for thousands of years.
The bad news is that this technology must be learned. Writers, you see, are not simply born with some innate ability to conceive, design, develop and compose an engaging story.
The problem is that storytelling is not being taught in schools, universities, or even in the marketplace of ideas. This invaluable technology is all but lost and forgotten at this late date.
However, the good news is that I’ve found it.
Through pure dumb luck, after 50 years struggling with the muse, I happened to ask the right question. And in the pursuit of that answer I went down the rabbit hole, so to speak.
Two years later I’d managed to crack the code, and ten years later I’d managed to segment and sequence this ancient technology into a step-by-step system.
Well, not exactly “born” more like hacked out of where it was buried and resurrected to the light of day.
You see, the “technology” has always been there. Just buried under a ton of false, incomplete and misleading data. The most suppressive of which was the miss-definition and scrambling of the nomenclature of the craft.
The craft of the storyteller, just like any other craft, relies on and is dependent on a significant number of words specific to the craft.
The technology of storytelling has its own lingo. And anyone who wishes to study the craft, let alone become proficient in it, must first understand the language.
When I say “cracked the code” what I mean specifically is that I untangled, sorted out and restored the definitions of the keywords of the craft.
No easy task there. It required searching through numerous dictionaries and tracing hundreds of keywords back to their Latin and Greek roots. Then separating, comparing and analyzing those key words against their opposites.
As strange as it might seem one of the keys to thoroughly understanding any given word is to evaluate the concept against its apposite or reciprocal meaning.
As you might suspect this was a grueling and time consuming process. However it payed off in a huge and astonishing way.
With the correct nomenclature in place I was able to sort out the methodology for the Conception, Design, Development and Composition of a story.
Which resulted in the basic discovery that storytelling is now and has been for centuries a technology.
And with another couple years of research I was able to formulate the sum of all my work into the development of the story tech system.
The basic modules of this step-by-step system are:
In that specific order.
Each of which is a subsystem of step-by-step processes that walk the writer from his bright idea for a story to a completed high quality manuscript that will dazzle his audience.
Re-writing is for journalists, reporters, copywriters and academics who are working to convince and/or sell ideas. And all too often convince their piers of just how smart they are.
However this form of "writing" has very little to do with storytelling.
The proof is simple and very easy to show, yet extremely important for aspiring writers to grasp.
